François Rolland

François Rolland was a judge of the Superior Court of Québec from 1996 to 2015 and Chief Justice from 2004 to 2015. For many years, he presided over numerous matters in a wide variety of areas of the law, including large commercial disputes, major class actions, insolvency and reorganization cases, and family patrimony disputes. He chaired numerous settlement conferences in civil, family and commercial cases, as well as several facilitation conferences in criminal matters.

He worked actively to set up the Superior Court’s settlement conference and class action divisions, and was an active contributor in the development of the commercial division.

Since his retirement of the judiciary in August 2015, François Rolland was appointed by the Québec government, as the Director of the Voluntary Reimbursement Program. This mandate will end in November 2017. He also presides over private mediation and arbitration mandates, involving mostly commercial matters, including large multijurisdictional class actions.

 

François Rolland is Chair of the Board of Directors of “Éducaloi”, Vice-President of the Board of Directors of the “Centre d’accès à l’information juridique (CAIJ)” and a member of the Board of the Canadian Forum on Civil Justice.

 

Throughout his career as a lawyer, judge and Chief Justice, François Rolland was a frequent guest speaker to a wide range of audiences, both locally and internationally, including students, colleagues, business people, community members and foreign guests and dignitaries. He also taught ethics at the National Judicial Institute for 10 years.
